Yes - all gold-plated and fashion jewelry can tarnish over time as the thin gold layer meets air, moisture, perfume and skin oils. You can slow it down a lot: put jewelry on last (after perfume and lotion), take it off before showering, wipe it after wearing, and store it dry. Pieces worn daily, like rings and bracelets, naturally show wear sooner than necklaces.

Solid gold is gold all the way through - the most valuable and durable. Gold filled has a thick layer of gold bonded to a base metal, so it lasts for years. Gold plated has a very thin layer of real gold over a base metal - it looks like solid gold at a fraction of the price, which is why fashion jewelry like ours uses it, but the layer wears faster and needs gentler care.

Moissanite is a lab-created stone with even more sparkle (fire) than a diamond and nearly the same hardness, so it stays brilliant for everyday wear. Cubic zirconia (CZ) is softer and more budget-friendly, with a slightly glassier shine. Diamonds are the hardest and most expensive. To the eye, a well-cut moissanite ring looks like a diamond ring - most people cannot tell the difference without a tester.

The green tint some people get comes from copper in the metal alloy reacting with skin moisture and sweat - it is harmless and washes off. Sterling silver and plated pieces can cause it on some skin types, especially in humidity. It is best not to. Water, soap, chlorine and salt speed up tarnishing and can loosen stones and weaken pearl silk and beaded cords. Take jewelry off before showering, swimming, workouts and sleep - it takes seconds and adds years to your pieces.

For most fashion jewelry: wipe gently with a soft, dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth after wearing. For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with one drop of mild soap, a very soft brush, rinse quickly and dry completely. Never use harsh chemicals, silver dips or ultrasonic cleaners on plated, pearl or beaded pieces.

Pearls are delicate: wipe them with a soft cloth after every wear to remove oils and perfume. If needed, use a cloth dampened with plain water only - never soak a pearl necklace (water weakens the silk thread), and never use chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners. Lay it flat to dry and store it separately so harder stones cannot scratch it.

Store each piece dry, separately, in a soft pouch or a lined jewelry box, away from bathroom humidity. Wipe pieces before putting them away, and keep pearls and beaded bracelets apart from metal pieces that could scratch them. Anti-tarnish strips in the box help silver pieces stay bright longer.

Wrap a thin strip of paper or string around the base of your finger, mark where it meets, and measure the length in millimetres - that is your inside circumference. Compare it with a standard ring size chart (for example, about 54.4 mm is a US size 7). Measure in the evening when fingers are at their normal size, and measure the exact finger you will wear the ring on.

Measure around your wrist with a tape or string, then add about half an inch for a snug fit or one inch for a relaxed fit. The average women's bracelet size is about 7 inches.
